Torch of Light

Tokyo, Japan

In earthquake-prone cities such as Tokyo, a major quake often cuts the power, which is especially dangerous at night. Torch of Light, a DOPI concept inspired by traditional Japanese landscape lighting, guides people to safe, illuminated open areas and shelters.

Recessed in the ground in normal conditions, each unit rises when activated. A solar-charged battery powers an RGBW beam aimed at the sky, and LED panels unfold to light the site. Sensors read crowd density: white signals normal conditions, blue an overcrowded site and red an urgent medical need, called in from a keypad on the pole.

Read from a distance, the colors help people choose where to go and help rescue teams direct aid.
